Los estudiantes de educación superior de Providencia ya no tendrán que abandonar su territorio, gracias a que el Gobierno abrió programas presenciales en la isla.

Dentro del propósito de la universalización de la educación en el país, el Instituto Nacional de Formación Técnica Profesional de San Andrés (INFOTEP) lleva, por primera vez, educación superior presencial a Providencia, que se materializa a través de la estrategia ‘Educación Superior en tu Colegio’, que garantiza el derecho a la formación técnica en territorios históricamente excluidos.

Así lo informó el Ministerio de Educación, el cual anotó que con la implementación de dos programas técnicos profesionales en modalidad sabatina -Operación de Procesos Contables y Procesos Administrativos– se da un paso decisivo para garantizar justicia educativa y fortalecer el tejido social de Providencia.

“Esta apertura no es solo un programa académico. Es un mensaje claro a la comunidad: la educación superior es un derecho que también nace aquí y puede transformar su territorio”, afirmó el viceministro de Educación, Ricardo Moreno.

Este avance ha sido posible gracias al compromiso presupuestal del Gobierno del Cambio. Las transferencias al INFOTEP pasaron de $ 11.372 millones en 2023 a $ 14.290 millones en 2024, lo que significa incrementos del 12 % y 41 % respectivamente frente a 2022. Recursos adicionales para funcionamiento e inversión -que en 2024 alcanzan los $ 3.589 millones- fortalecen la capacidad institucional para expandir la oferta educativa.

Antes de esta intervención, el 43 % de los bachilleres de Providencia no accedían a educación superior. Hoy, gracias a esta política transformadora, 27 estudiantes ya cursan sus programas sin abandonar la isla, rompiendo el ciclo de desarraigo que afectaba a las juventudes locales.

Así mismo y respetando las particularidades socioculturales, económicas y geográficas de Providencia, INFOTEP estableció un calendario académico especial mediante el Acuerdo 006 de marzo de 2025, garantizando que la educación responda verdaderamente al contexto insular.

Visión de largo plazo con programas pertinentes

Esta intervención hace parte de un plan nacional que proyecta más de 1.300 cupos nuevos en municipios insulares y costeros del Caribe. En Providencia se espera alcanzar 156 cupos en programas estratégicos como:

• Turismo sostenible

• Logística portuaria

• Gestión ambiental

• Atención prehospitalaria

• Sistemas informáticos

• Agrotransformación

Cada programa responde a un análisis de pertinencia enfocado en las necesidades productivas, ambientales y culturales de la región.

Higher education students on Providencia Island will no longer have to leave their territory, thanks to the government’s opening of in-person programs on the island.

As part of the goal of universalizing education in the country, the San Andrés National Institute of Technical and Professional Training (INFOTEP) is bringing in-person higher education to Providencia Island for the first time. This is realized through the «Higher Education in Your School» strategy, which guarantees the right to technical training in historically excluded territories.

This was reported by the Ministry of Education, which noted that with the implementation of two Saturday-based professional technical programs—Accounting Process Operations and Administrative Processes—a decisive step is taken to guarantee educational justice and strengthen the social fabric of Providencia.

“This opening is not just an academic program. It sends a clear message to the community: higher education is a right that also originates here and can transform its territory,” stated Vice Minister of Education Ricardo Moreno.

This progress has been possible thanks to the budgetary commitment of the Government of Change. Transfers to INFOTEP increased from $11.372 billion in 2023 to $14.29 billion in 2024, representing increases of 12% and 41%, respectively, compared to 2022. Additional resources for operations and investment—which will reach $3.589 billion in 2024—strengthen institutional capacity to expand educational offerings.

Before this intervention, 43% of Providencia high school graduates had no access to higher education. Today, thanks to this transformative policy, 27 students are already pursuing their programs without leaving the island, breaking the cycle of displacement that affected local youth.

Furthermore, and respecting the sociocultural, economic, and geographic characteristics of Providencia, INFOTEP established a special academic calendar through Agreement 006 of March 2025, ensuring that education truly responds to the island context.

Long-term vision with relevant programs

This intervention is part of a national plan that projects more than 1,300 new places in island and coastal municipalities of the Caribbean. In Providencia, 156 places are expected to be filled in strategic programs such as:
