EL DÍA DEL PERIODISTA

El lunes 9 de febrero 2026, celebramos una profesión que desafía las leyes del tiempo. -El periodismo de ayer y el de hoy están vibrantes; el del futuro, sin duda, lo seguirá estando. Esta labor ha resistido el peso de las décadas y los embates traicioneros de sus detractores. El periodismo es, en esencia, inmortal, pues resulta imposible extirparlo del transcurrir cotidiano de la humanidad. Con alas propias, surca los cielos de la vida eterna, guiado por espíritus de luz que lo hacen brillar con tres antorchas fundamentales: veracidad, amor y sabiduría.
Levanto una «Copa de Amor» llena de «Vino de Gratitud» para brindar por la salud de quienes ejercemos el Periodismo en Colombia. Hoy, recuerdo las palabras de Ramón Salaverría Aliaga, al distinguir los tres tipos de periodistas: los que tiran del periodismo hacia adelante, los que lo usan solo para ir tirando en la vida, y aquellos que, lamentablemente, lo ejercen solo para «tirar» o destruir. Nosotros celebramos a los primeros.
La historia de Pereira no podría contarse sin el aporte del periodismo. El progreso de nuestra «Querendona» ha sido documentado y, en muchos casos, impulsado por la prensa. Desde los ires y venires de la política y la economía, hasta los hitos en infraestructura, tecnología y proyección mundial, el periodista pereirano ha sido cronista y arquitecto de la identidad local.
En nuestra ciudad, la misión del periodista es clara: publicar con coherencia, ética, conocimiento y responsabilidad social. Es una tarea que la mayoría cumple con creces, superando restricciones impuestas por intereses particulares. Y aunque no faltan los «avivatos» que empañan la imagen del gremio, la reserva moral de la profesión sigue siendo su mayor fortaleza.
El 9 de febrero 2026, alzaré la Copa del Recuerdo mencionando a los Periodistas a quienes tuve el honor de rendir reconocimiento antes de su partida a la eternidad. Sus legados son cimientos de actualidad: Javier Ramírez González, Rafael Cano, Libardo Gómez, Néstor Cardona Arcila, Nelson Gómez, Hernán Castaño Hincapié, Hernando Hoyos, Nicanor Cardona Velásquez, Néstor Cardona Gutiérrez, Silvio Posada Castaño, Daniel Alfonso Benítez Rebellón, Óscar Hincapié Velásquez, Silvio González, Javier Giraldo Neira, Jorge Eliécer Orozco, Jorge Molina Marulanda, Miguel Álvarez, Abelardo Marín. -Su trinchera del pensamiento y dignidad, la mantendremos hoy y todos los mañanas por venir.

JOURNALIST’S DAY.

On Monday, February 9, 2026, we celebrate a profession that defies the laws of time. Journalism, both past and present, is vibrant; the journalism of the future will undoubtedly continue to be so. This profession has withstood the weight of decades and the treacherous attacks of its detractors. Journalism is, in essence, immortal, for it is impossible to eradicate it from the daily life of humanity. With its own wings, it soars through the skies of eternal life, guided by spirits of light that illuminate it with three fundamental torches: truthfulness, love, and wisdom.
I raise a «Cup of Love» filled with «Wine of Gratitude» to toast the health of all of us who practice journalism in Colombia. Today, I recall the words of Ramón Salaverría Aliaga, who distinguished three types of journalists: those who propel journalism forward, those who use it merely to get by in life, and those who, unfortunately, practice it only to tear down or destroy. We celebrate the first group.
The history of Pereira could not be told without the contribution of journalism. The progress of our beloved city has been documented and, in many cases, driven by the press. From the ups and downs of politics and the economy to milestones in infrastructure, technology, and global projection, Pereira’s journalists have been chroniclers and architects of the local identity.
In our city, the mission of the journalist is clear: to publish with coherence, ethics, knowledge, and social responsibility. It is a task that most fulfill admirably, overcoming restrictions imposed by vested interests. And although there is no shortage of opportunists who tarnish the image of the profession, its moral compass remains its greatest strength.
On February 9, 2026, I will raise the Cup of Remembrance, mentioning the journalists whom I had the honor of recognizing before their passing. Their legacies remain fundamental to our present: Javier Ramírez González, Rafael Cano, Libardo Gómez, Néstor Cardona Arcila, Nelson Gómez, Hernán Castaño Hincapié, Hernando Hoyos, Nicanor Cardona Velásquez, Néstor Cardona Gutiérrez, Silvio Posada Castaño, Daniel Alfonso Benítez Rebellón, Óscar Hincapié Velásquez, Silvio González, Javier Giraldo Neira, Jorge Eliécer Orozco, Jorge Molina Marulanda, Miguel Álvarez, and Abelardo Marín. We will uphold their bastion of thought and dignity today and in all the future.
