COLOMBIA MUST PROTECT WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS.

BY MARÍA IRMA NOREÑA, PRE-CANDIDATE FOR THE SENATE OF THE REPUBLIC 2026

In Colombia, thousands of women face the same challenge every day: starting businesses while still being mothers, daughters, friends, or wives. These are women who juggle multiple responsibilities, support their families, and, despite limited resources, manage to create opportunities where there were once obstacles.

I know this reality firsthand because I come from a family where women have always been the driving force. And I am convinced of one thing: when a woman succeeds, she and her entire family thrive. When she starts a business, studies, or leads, her well-being is reflected in her children, her partner, and her community.

I say this not from emotion, but from evidence. According to UN Women, approximately 47% of individual businesses in the country are led by women. However, only 13% of formal businesses are female-owned. Behind this gap lie thousands of stories of women lacking talent and capital, of unsupported effort, of dreams that need backing.

That’s why Colombia needs a comprehensive national policy to strengthen women’s entrepreneurship, one that isn’t just another program, but a holistic support system: with training, financing, technical assistance, and market visibility. A policy that connects women in cities with those in rural areas, established businesswomen with those just starting out, and that allows them all to grow on equal terms.

Talking about women entrepreneurs isn’t just talking about gender; it’s talking about development, equity, and national productivity. Every business led by a woman creates jobs, boosts the local economy, and strengthens family bonds. According to World Bank figures, women reinvest up to 90% of their income in their families’ education and well-being, compared to an average of 30% to 40% for men. That single figure explains why empowering women is a strategic decision for the country. It requires policies that don’t force them to choose between their dreams and their loved ones, between being mothers and being entrepreneurs. Policies that understand that progress isn’t measured solely in economic figures, but in the capacity to transform lives.

Women have demonstrated that they don’t need concessions, but rather the right conditions. Conditions to grow, compete, and build upon their talents. And in this endeavor, the State has a debt that we must repay with determination and consistency. Strengthening female entrepreneurship is not a romantic notion; it is a smart policy for the future of Colombia.
