Rubén Dario Franco Narvaez: Miércoles 22 de abril 2026 – Día Internacional de la Madre Tierra.
El 22 de abril se celebra el Día Internacional de la Madre Tierra, una efeméride oficial proclamada por las Naciones Unidas en resolución 63/278 del 22 de abril de 2009.
El Día Internacional de la Madre Tierra se celebra oficialmente desde el año 2009 con el objetivo de concienciar a la humanidad sobre los problemas generados por la superpoblación, la contaminación, la conservación de la biodiversidad y otras preocupaciones ambientales.
Realmente, el primer antecedente del Día de la Tierra se retrotrae a 1968 cuando el Servicio de Salud Pública de EEUU organizó el Simposio de Ecología Humana para que estudiantes de diversos lugares escucharan a científicos hablar sobre los efectos del deterioro ambiental en la salud humana. Dos años después en 1970, el senador y activista ambiental Gaylord Nelson propone la creación de una agencia ambiental y se realiza una manifestación masiva a la que acuden más de dos mil universidades, decenas de miles de escuelas públicas y centenares de comunidades. Esta presión social da sus resultados y el gobierno de los Estados Unidos creó la Agencia de Protección Ambiental y una serie de leyes destinadas a la protección del medio ambiente.
En 1972 se celebró la primera conferencia internacional sobre el medio ambiente. La Cumbre de la Tierra de Estocolmo, cuyo objetivo fue sensibilizar a los líderes mundiales sobre la magnitud de los problemas ambientales.
Desde el año 2005, la ONU ha puesto en marcha el llamado premio «Campeones de la Tierra», a través del cual se reconoce la labor de personas o grupos que trabajan por el medio ambiente, que inspiran a otros y que defienden un futuro mejor para nuestro planeta. Se trata del máximo galardón medioambiental del mundo. Cualquier persona o grupo puede optar a este premio. Incluso puedes participar nominando a alguien que creas que lo merece.

No es un regalo casual; es la entrega total de mi ser a tu cuidado y protección. Este sentimiento de gratitud es tuyo, mi MADRE TIERRA, porque de ti venimos y en tu regazo encontramos el sustento para seguir soñando.

April 22nd is International Mother Earth Day, an official observance proclaimed by the United Nations in resolution 63/278 of April 22, 2009. International Mother Earth Day has been officially celebrated since 2009 with the aim of raising awareness about the problems caused by overpopulation, pollution, biodiversity loss, and other environmental concerns.
However, the first precursor to Earth Day dates back to 1968 when the U.S. Public Health Service organized the Symposium on Human Ecology, allowing students from around the world to hear scientists speak about the effects of environmental degradation on human health. Two years later, in 1970, Senator and environmental activist Gaylord Nelson proposed the creation of an environmental agency, sparking a massive demonstration attended by more than two thousand universities, tens of thousands of public schools, and hundreds of communities. This public pressure yielded results, and the United States government created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a series of laws aimed at protecting the environment.

In 1972, the first international conference on the environment was held: the Stockholm Earth Summit, whose objective was to raise awareness among world leaders about the magnitude of environmental problems.

Since 2005, the UN has established the «Champions of the Earth» award, which recognizes the work of individuals or groups who work for the environment, inspire others, and advocate for a better future for our planet. It is the world’s highest environmental award. Any individual or group can be nominated for this award. You can even participate by nominating someone you believe deserves it.
