Desde el año 1997 cada 24 de octubre se celebra en varios países el Día Internacional de las Bibliotecas. Una fecha que busca resaltar la importancia que tienen este tipo de edificaciones para la historia humana como resguardo de su cultura, de sus escritos, de sus creencias.
La historia de ese día comenzó entre las cenizas y la perdida de cientos de miles de textos únicos. La imagen que quedó grabada en la mente del mundo fue la del músico Vedran Smailovic, tocando su violonchelo entre los escombros del hermoso edificio, que también había realizado la función de Casa de Gobierno en el siglo XIX. El memoricidio es la palabra que se utiliza para describir la destrucción del acervo cultural de un pueblo. El médico e historiador croata Mirko D. Grmek, utilizó por primera vez este término en un discurso que diera ante las Naciones Unidas, dando origen no solo a la palabra sino al propósito de este organismo de evitar a toda costa que este tipo de crímenes de guerra siguiesen ocurriendo en el mundo. Uno de los mayores exponentes de la terrible repercusión que puede tener el memoricidio en la historia humana se explica en la película Operación Monumento, donde un grupo de historiadores y curadores de arte, conforman un grupo de salvamento militar para proteger las obras de artes de Europa durante el conflicto de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Since 1997, International Library Day has been celebrated in several countries on October 24th. A date that seeks to highlight the importance of these types of buildings in human history as a safeguard of their culture, their writings, and their beliefs.
The story of that day began among the ashes and the loss of hundreds of thousands of unique texts. The image that remained etched in the world’s mind was that of musician Vedran Smailovic, playing his cello among the rubble of the beautiful building, which had also served as the Government House in the 19th century. Memoricide is the word used to describe the destruction of a people’s cultural heritage. Croatian physician and historian Mirko D. Grmek first used this term in a speech he gave before the United Nations, giving rise not only to the word but also to the organization’s purpose of preventing such war crimes from continuing to occur worldwide at all costs. One of the greatest examples of the terrible impact that memoricide can have on human history is explained in the film «Operation Monument,» in which a group of historians and art curators form a military rescue group to protect European works of art during the Second World War. -0-0-0-
