El Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos anunció una nueva medida en el trámite de la visa: limitará la exención de la entrevista. Es decir, solicitantes que antes no necesitaban acudir a la entrevista con el funcionario consular tendrán ahora que presentarse ante la autoridad.

El ajuste se produce en paralelo al incremento del precio de la visa y la impresión de otro diseño del documento, cambios con los cuales Estados Unidos busca reforzar la seguridad del proceso.

¿Quién podrá tener exención de la entrevista para la visa?

La exención de la entrevista para la visa había permitido que personas no tuvieran que acudir presencialmente ante el cónsul para explicarle los motivos de su solicitud cuando cumplían con unas condiciones.

Por ejemplo, no era necesario que niños y adultos mayores fueran entrevistados, así que el trámite para ellos era mayormente virtual.

Sin embargo, el Departamento de Estado decidió revertir las exenciones y obligar a los solicitantes a dirigirse a las embajadas de Estados Unidos.

«Todos los solicitantes de visa de no inmigrante, incluyendo los menores de 14 años y mayores de 79, generalmente requerirán una entrevista presencial con un funcionario consular», dijo la entidad en un aviso informativo publicado en julio de 2025.

Solo estarán exentos de la entrevista para la visa:

«Solicitantes de visa A-1, A-2, C-3 (excepto asistentes, sirvientes o empleados personales de funcionarios acreditados), G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, NATO-1 a NATO-6, o TECRO E-1.Solicitantes de visas de tipo diplomático u oficial. Solicitantes que renueven una visa B-1, B-2, B1/B2 de validez completa o una tarjeta/permiso de cruce fronterizo (para ciudadanos mexicanos) dentro de los 12 meses posteriores al vencimiento de la visa anterior, y que tuvieran al menos 18 años de edad al momento de la emisión de la visa anterior».

¿Qué pasará con la exención de la entrevista si es renovación de la visa de turismo o negocios (B-1, B-2, B1/B2)?

A partir de la nueva normativa del Departamento de Estado, solicitantes de visa de turismo o negocios (B-1, B-2, B1/B2) podrían estar exentos de la entrevista solo si se trata de una renovación y si además:

Renuevan dentro de los 12 meses posteriores al vencimiento de la visa anterior. Tienen al menos 18 años de edad al momento de la emisión de la visa anterior.

Hay otras condiciones para las anteriores personas, como:

Presentar su solicitud en su país de nacionalidad o residencia.Que nunca se les ha negado una visa (a menos que dicha negación haya sido superada o condonada).No tener ninguna inelegibilidad aparente o potencial.

¿Desde cuándo cambia la exención de la entrevista para la visa?

Los cambios en las condiciones para la exención de la entrevista para la visa regirán desde el 2 de septiembre de 2025, en las distintas embajadas o consulados de Estados Unidos.

El Departamento de Estado invitó a consultar las páginas de dichas autoridades para tener muy presentes cada una de las condiciones actualizadas.

La autoridad también reiteró que los funcionarios consulares «podrían requerir entrevistas presenciales según el caso y por cualquier motivo».

Nuevo precio y diseño de la visa americana

A la limitación de exenciones se suma el nuevo precio y diseño de la visa que Estados Unidos ha estado implementando.

En primer lugar, el costo de la visa se elevará debido a una legislación aprobada por el Congreso. Se trata de la ‘tarifa de integridad de visa’, que incrementa en 250 dólares el precio de los documentos de turistas, estudiantes o trabajo.

Inicialmente, el precio de la visa para Estados Unidos es de 185 dólares. Ese valor usted lo debe pagar cuando va a solicitar el documento. Sin embargo, con la nueva tarifa implementada por el gobierno de Donald Trump desde este 2025, el precio de la visa subirá 250 dólares en caso de que a usted se la aprueben, por lo que en total tendrá que pagar 435 dólares.

El segundo ajuste, referente al diseño, tiene que ver con la desaparición de la Visa Lincoln. La imagen del expresidente Abraham Lincoln junto al Capitolio que se veía al fondo del documento se cambiará.

Las embajadas ahora imprimirán el diseño de la Visa Puente o ‘Bridge Visa’ con la imagen del puente de Golden Gate, de San Francisco. Según las autoridades americanas, el nuevo diseño es «más duradero y seguro».

The U.S. Department of State announced changes to the process. Take note.

The U.S. Department of State announced a new measure in the visa process: it will limit the interview exemption. This means that applicants who previously did not need to attend an interview with the consular officer will now have to appear before the authority.

The adjustment comes in parallel with the increase in the visa fee and the printing of a different document design, changes with which the United States seeks to strengthen the security of the process.

Who will be eligible for a visa interview exemption?

The visa interview exemption had allowed people to avoid having to appear in person before the consul to explain the reasons for their application if they met certain conditions.

For example, children and older adults were not required to be interviewed, so the process for them was largely virtual.

However, the State Department decided to reverse the exemptions and require applicants to go to U.S. embassies.

«All nonimmigrant visa applicants, including those under 14 years of age and over 79 years of age, will generally require an in-person interview with a consular officer,» the agency said in an informational notice published in July 2025.

The following will be exempt from the visa interview:

«Applicants for A-1, A-2, C-3 (except assistants, servants, or personal employees of accredited officials), G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, NATO-1 through NATO-6, or TECRO E-1 visas. Applicants for diplomatic or official visas. Applicants renewing a full-validity B-1, B-2, B1/B2 visa, or a border crossing card/permit (for Mexican citizens) within 12 months of the expiration of the previous visa, and who were at least 18 years of age at the time of issuance of the previous visa.»

What will happen with the interview waiver if it’s a renewal of a tourist or business visa (B-1, B-2, B1/B2)?

Under the new Department of State regulations, applicants for tourist or business visas (B-1, B-2, B1/B2) may be exempt from the interview only if it’s a renewal and if:

They renew within 12 months of the expiration of the previous visa. They are at least 18 years of age at the time of issuance of the previous visa.

There are other conditions for the above-mentioned individuals, such as:

They must file their application in their country of nationality or residence. They must never have been denied a visa (unless that denial has been overcome or waived). They must not have any apparent or potential ineligibility.

Since when does the visa interview waiver change?

The changes to the visa interview waiver requirements will take effect starting September 2, 2025, at the various U.S. embassies and consulates.

The State Department invited visitors to the websites of these authorities to be fully aware of each of the updated requirements.

The authority also reiterated that consular officials «may require in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis and for any reason.»

New Price and Design of the U.S. Visa

In addition to the limitations on exemptions, there is the new price and design of the visa that the United States has been implementing.

First, the cost of the visa will increase due to legislation passed by Congress. This is the «visa integrity fee,» which increases the price of tourist, student, or work visas by $250.

Initially, the price of a U.S. visa is $185. You must pay this amount when you apply for the document. However, with the new fee implemented by the Donald Trump administration starting in 2025, the visa price will increase by $250 if approved, so you will have to pay a total of $435.
