El Presidente Colombiano, defendió este lunes  la concesión de asilo político al ex presídete Panameño, Ricardo Martinelli, condenado por corrupción, porque según indicó en su país “ debe sitio de refugio y liberta”, y el asilo es un derecho universal que trasciende ideologías políticas.

“Colombia ha sido tierra del asilo, es un derecho universal, no importa que sean de derecha, de izquierda, o que sean poetas, políticos o perseguidos”, declaro Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego a medios colombianos en Pekín, donde mañana participara en la IV reunión Ministerial de la Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC), y China.

Cuestionado por los periodistas por el historial judicial de Martinelli, el mandatario respondió “en mi opinión, Colombia debe ser, como lo fue Panamá, un sitio de refugio, de liberta y libre expresión”.

Martinelli salió de manera repentina el sábado en la noche de la Embajada de Nicaragua en Panamá donde se había refugiado en Febrero de 2024 luego que la justicia confirmara su condena por blanqueo de capitales, y llego a Colombia tras recibir asilo político.

The Colombian President defended this Monday the granting of political asylum to former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli, convicted of corruption, because, as he stated, in his country, «he owes a place of refuge and freedom,» and asylum is a universal right that transcends political ideologies. “Colombia has been a land of asylum; it is a universal right, regardless of whether you are right-wing, left-wing, or poets, politicians, or persecuted,” Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego told Colombian media in Beijing, where he will participate tomorrow in the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and China.

Questioned by journalists about Martinelli’s legal record, the president responded, “In my opinion, Colombia should be, like Panama, a place of refuge, of liberty, and free expression.”

Martinelli abruptly left the Nicaraguan Embassy in Panama on Saturday night, where he had sought refuge in February 2024 after the court confirmed his conviction for money laundering. He arrived in Colombia after receiving political asylum.
