Viernes 14 de noviembre 2025 – Día Internacional de los Vendedores Ambulantes.
El Día Internacional de los Vendedores Ambulantes ha sido creado en el año 2012 por iniciativa de la organización StreetNet International, mejor conocida como la Alianza Internacional de Vendedores de Calle. Con ello se pretende reconocer a todos los vendedores ambulantes e informales, aunando esfuerzos por la defensa de sus derechos y los retos que debe enfrentar este sector. Se destaca la importancia de proteger a estos trabajadores que desempeñan su labor habitualmente en la vía pública.

MINICUENTO 2014 – RUDAFRA. WILLIAM RESTREPO CORTÉS.
Desde los siete años de edad, William Restrepo Cortés, mostró interés por el periodismo; en primaria y en secundaria, se destacó por la lectura de noticias que transmitía, a pulmón abierto, en los patios de recreo. Su papá, Lubín –hincha número 1 del Deportivo Pereira-, que laboraba como taxista en la Empresa India, le dedicaba largas horas paseándolo por las polvorientas calles pereiranas; al llegar a casa, le narraba a su querida mamá María Deisy, y a su hermanito Jairo, todo lo que había visto y oído en su tradicional paseo; pero, lo que más le llamaba la atención era la gran cantidad de vendedores ambulantes en el centro de la ciudad; por eso, les dijo: Cuándo yo sea periodista, con ellos, tendré mucha información para publicar, porque observo que tienen mucho contacto con toda la gente.
A los 15 años de edad, guiado por su primer maestro de Radio –Álvaro Rendón Bravo-, inició su carrera en Locución, en La Voz del Pueblo. Fue acogido, por su formidable estilo, por muchas Radiodifusoras. Emprendió su vuelo a Estados Unidos, cursando periodismo en California. Al obtener su grado profesional, laboró exitosamente en varias emisoras y en la Televisión Estadounidense, obteniendo resonantes condecoraciones internacionales. Después de triunfar en los Estados Unidos durante 44 años, William Restrepo Cortés, regresó a su natal Pereira con los deseos de acompañar a sus padres que vivían a trescientos metros del Lago Uribe Uribe, en enero del 2009. Construimos una verdadera amistad desde esa fecha, y nos reuníamos frecuentemente. Lo acompañé en la despedida al infinito de su papá Lubín Restrepo Correa el 19 de agosto del 2010; y luego, de su amada madre María Deisy Cortés. Batallamos conjuntamente en varios medios de comunicación y creamos la Fundación Periodistas de Risaralda, publicamos el Periódico Ciudadano de Cuba con gran impacto, capacitando a líderes barriales para que divulgaran las inquietudes de la comunidad. Participamos en las Jornadas Extendidas de Educación, en Instituciones Secundarias de zonas rurales del departamento, capacitando estudiantes de último grado de bachillerato y a profesores, sobre lecto-escritura con el novedoso método del Escarabajo; logrando el primer puesto y mereciendo el ofrecimiento de extender nuestro trabajo a la mayoría de municipios de Risaralda.
En una larga entrevista que, le realicé cariñosamente, para varios medios de comunicación: radiales, televisivos y escritos; recuerdo –muy bien- una respuesta -sin titubeos- a una de mis preguntas: ¿Defínase personal, profesional y políticamente, Maestro? –William Restrepo Cortés: “Soy un luchador y defensor de la verdad. Creo más en el por qué, no que en el sí señor no se puede hacer. Respeto el derecho ajeno. Los admiro a todos, y de todos aprendo. El periodismo y la psicología fueron mis metas, y las alcancé. Estuve donde quise estar. Llegué hasta donde mis capacidades me lo permitieron. Subí a las cimas más altas, y estuve en las barracas donde el odio y la fuerza no distinguen lazos de sangre, ni sentimientos de ninguna clase. Me considero un hombre libre, y prefiero morir de pie que vivir de rodillas. Respeto las ideas de los demás. No creo en los partidos políticos que sacrifican sus valores e ideales colectivos, por los intereses particulares.
William Restrepo Cortés, un gran señor, un excelente periodista y un buen ser humano.

International Street Vendors’ Day was created in 2012 by the organization StreetNet International, better known as the International Alliance of Street Vendors. Its aim is to recognize all street vendors and informal workers, uniting efforts to defend their rights and address the challenges this sector faces. It highlights the importance of protecting these workers who regularly carry out their work in public spaces.

From the age of seven, William Restrepo Cortés showed an interest in journalism. In elementary and high school, he stood out for his ability to read the news aloud, at the top of his lungs, in the schoolyards. His father, Lubín—Deportivo Pereira’s number one fan—worked as a taxi driver for Empresa India and spent long hours taking him for rides through Pereira’s dusty streets. When they got home, he would tell his beloved mother, María Deisy, and his little brother, Jairo, everything he had seen and heard on their traditional outing. But what caught his attention most was the large number of street vendors in the city center. That’s why he told them, «When I’m a journalist, I’ll have a lot of information to publish from them, because I see that they have so much contact with everyone.»

At the age of 15, guided by his first radio mentor, Álvaro Rendón Bravo, he began his career in broadcasting at La Voz del Pueblo (The Voice of the People). His formidable style attracted him to many radio stations. He then traveled to the United States, studying journalism in California. After graduating, he worked successfully at several radio stations and on American television, earning prestigious international awards. After 44 years of success in the United States, William Restrepo Cortés returned to his native Pereira in January 2009 to be with his parents, who lived just 300 meters from Lake Uribe Uribe. We forged a true friendship from that time onward and met frequently. I accompanied him to the funeral of his father, Lubín Restrepo Correa, on August 19, 2010, and later, to the passing of his beloved mother, María Deisy Cortés. We worked together in various media outlets and founded the Risaralda Journalists Foundation. We published the highly successful Citizen Newspaper of Cuba, training community leaders to disseminate the concerns of their communities. We participated in the Extended School Days program in secondary schools in rural areas of the department, training graduating high school students and teachers in literacy using the innovative Beetle method. We achieved first place and were offered the opportunity to extend our work to most of the municipalities in Risaralda.

In a long interview that I conducted with him affectionately for various media outlets—radio, television, and print—I remember very well his unwavering response to one of my questions: «Teacher, how would you define yourself personally, professionally, and politically?» –William Restrepo Cortés: “I am a fighter and defender of the truth. I believe more in ‘why’ than in ‘yes sir, it can’t be done.’ I respect the rights of others. I admire everyone, and I learn from everyone. Journalism and psychology were my goals, and I achieved them. I was where I wanted to be. I went as far as my abilities allowed. I climbed to the highest peaks, and I was in the barracks where hatred and force do not distinguish between blood ties or feelings of any kind. I consider myself a free man, and I prefer to die on my feet than live on my knees. I respect the ideas of others. I do not believe in political parties that sacrifice their collective values ​​and ideals for private interests.”
