Cada momento es una oportunidad para sonreírle a la vida. SONRÍA… SONRÍA… SONRÍA… CON AMOR Y ALEGRÍA, AGRADECIÉNDOLE A DIOS: CADA SEGUNDO DE VIDA. –RUDAFRA.

Los orígenes de esta celebración provienen de la civilización egipcia, donde la Diosa Isis, conocida como la «Gran Madre» era objeto de culto y homenaje. En la antigua Grecia era la Diosa Rea, madre de los Dioses del Olimpo, y en el Imperio Romano se rendía culto a la Diosa Cibeles, la Diosa Madre.

El catolicismo en Europa transformó esas celebraciones en honor de las diosas madres y lo trasladó a la Virgen María, madre de Jesús de Nazaret. El 8 de diciembre de 1954, el Papa Pío IX declaró que en esta fecha se celebrara el Día de la Madre, en honor a la Inmaculada Concepción. De hecho, en algunos países, como en Panamá se sigue celebrando el Día de la Madre el 8 de diciembre.

En Estados Unidos dos mujeres influyentes lucharon para que se reconociera el Día de la Madre. Fueron la poetisa y activista Julia Ward Howe y Anna Reeves Jarvis. Ésta última encabezó una activa campaña que fue extendiéndose a todo el territorio de los Estados Unidos. Y finalmente tuvo resultados. El presidente estadounidense Woodrow Wilson declaró oficialmente en 1914 que el Día de la Madre se celebraría el segundo domingo de mayo.
