New commander assumes leadership of the Amazon Naval Force.

In a military ceremony presided over by Admiral Juan Ricardo Rozo Obregón, Commander of the Colombian Navy, the change of command of the Amazon Naval Force took place. Vice Admiral Javier Alfonso Jaimes Pinilla handed over command to Rear Admiral Alfonso Córdoba García, after a year leading this strategic unit.

During his command in 2025, Vice Admiral Javier Alfonso Jaimes Pinilla led outstanding operational performance, achieving record seizures of cocaine and marijuana, as well as fulfilling 94% of the operational goals assigned to the Amazon Naval Force. Under his leadership, river control, international cooperation, and the institution’s comprehensive operations were strengthened in one of the most complex regions of the country, with a strategic focus on border security and the protection of the population.

Among the main achievements of his tenure are the 16th Colombia-Peru Binational Exercise, which delivered 60 tons of humanitarian aid to border communities; the development of the trinational exercise BRACOLPER, involving the navies of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru; the «Sailing to the Heart of Guaviare» campaign, which provided specialized medical care to riverside residents in the departments of Meta and Guaviare; and the «First Seminar on Transnational Crime and its Impact on the Amazon,» organized in conjunction with the European Union’s SEACOP project, which addressed key issues concerning crimes affecting the Amazon region and their global repercussions.

Likewise, the strengthening of relations and cooperation with the navies of Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil is highlighted, through the Amazon Fusion Center as a strategic platform for the exchange of naval intelligence and the planning of joint operations on the border, directly contributing to the security and stability of the region’s inhabitants.

Added to this positive assessment are the tripartite meeting with the Commanders-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru; the development of the River Route for the Amazon River Flotilla; the strengthening of initial training for river crews; the events and ceremonies to honor and keep alive the memory of the heroes who fell in the line of duty as a lasting legacy of courage, sacrifice, and love for Colombia; and the launch of the institutional historical book, «The River and Its Echoes: Narratives of the Inhabitants and the National Navy in the Colombian Amazon.»

Upon assuming command, Rear Admiral Alfonso Córdoba García emphasized that his administration for 2026 will focus on maintaining and strengthening the operational capacity of the Amazon Naval Force in the face of a dynamic and complex environment, impacted by illicit economies, transnational environmental crimes, and the presence of unconventional armed groups. In this regard, he noted that riverine control will remain the central focus of operations, prioritizing a permanent and integrated presence on the rivers, strengthening logistics and unit readiness, and fostering closer ties with the local population—all key factors for maintaining effectiveness, security, and fulfilling the constitutional mission in the region.

With this change of command, the Colombian Navy reaffirms its continued commitment to defending sovereignty, protecting life, and strengthening riverine security in the Amazon region. Under the leadership of Rear Admiral Alfonso Córdoba García, the Amazon Naval Force will continue to conduct sustained and coordinated operations to combat illicit economies, protect the strategic environment, and provide security to communities in southern Colombia.
