Por si no lo sabías, el 7 de enero se conmemora el Día Mundial del Sello Postal, debido a que ese día nació Heinrich Stephan, personaje que organizo el sistema postal de Alemania y además fue el fundador de la Unión Postal Universal (UPU).
Aunque hoy en día pareciera un esfuerzo sin importancia, dado que tenemos correos electrónicos, redes sociales y mensajería instantánea a nivel global, la UPU en su momento logró estandarizar las reglas internacionales para el intercambio de cartas y paquetes en un tiempo record. Consiguió que para finales del siglo XIX, todos los países del mundo excepto China, cumplieran dichas normativas. Lo que convirtió al correo en el mayor servicio de intercambio de información que tuvo la humanidad durante varias décadas, hasta la llegada de Internet.
En la actualidad, casi nadie envía cartas o paquetes por medio del correo tradicional. Todos preferimos usar el mundo digital, enviando un email o usando aplicaciones de mensajería instantánea. Aún así, es curioso el dato de que un sello postal puede llegar a valer miles de millones de dólares, dependiendo de su antigüedad, quién elaboró su arte y cuantas reproducciones de dicho sello existan en el mundo.

In case you didn’t know, January 7th is World Postage Stamp Day, commemorating the birth of Heinrich Stephan, the man who organized Germany’s postal system and was also the founder of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

Although it may seem like a trivial effort today, given that we have email, social media, and instant messaging globally, the UPU managed to standardize international rules for the exchange of letters and packages in record time. By the end of the 19th century, every country in the world except China complied with these regulations. This made mail the largest information exchange service humanity had for several decades, until the arrival of the internet.
Nowadays, almost no one sends letters or packages through traditional mail. We all prefer to use the digital world, sending an email or using instant messaging applications. Even so, it’s curious that a postage stamp can be worth billions of dollars, depending on its age, the artist who created it, and how many copies of that stamp exist in the world.
