El descubrimiento de Urano es el acontecimiento histórico por el cual se identifica a Urano y se lo reconoce como planeta. Aunque puede llegar a ser visible al ojo desnudo como los cinco planetas clásicos, nunca fue reconocido como planeta por los observadores antiguos debido a su oscuridad y órbita lenta.1 Sir William Herschel anunció su descubrimiento el 13 de marzo de 1781.

Sir William Herschel observó el planeta el 13 de marzo de 1781 mientras estaba en el jardín de su casa ubicada en 19 New King Street en el pueblo de Bath (Condado de Somerset),3 aunque en un principio (el 26 de abril de 1781) reportó que se trataba de un «cometa».4 Herschel «se dedicó a hacer una serie de observaciones sobre la paralaje de las estrellas fijas»,5 utilizando un telescopio diseñado por él mismo. Inicialmente se le acuñó el nombre de «Georgium Sidus» (la estrella de Jorge) en honor al rey que acababa de perder las colonias británicas en América, pero había ganado una estrella. Es, de hecho, el único planeta cuyo nombre se deriva de una figura de la mitología griega (su homólogo romano es Caelus). Hacia 1827, Urano era el nombre más utilizado para el planeta incluso en Gran Bretaña.

El descubrimiento de Urano supuso una revolución en la astronomía del siglo xviii ya que ampliaba de los límites conocidos del Sistema Solar por primera vez en la historia. Urano fue el primer planeta en ser descubierto con un telescopio.

Urano es el único planeta cuyo nombre deriva tanto de un personaje de la mitología griega como de la mitología romana; del griego «Οὐρανός» y latinizándose como «Ūranus». El adjetivo de Urano es «Uraniano»

The discovery of Uranus is the historic event by which Uranus was identified and recognized as a planet. Although it may be visible to the naked eye like the five classical planets, it was never recognized as a planet by ancient observers due to its darkness and slow orbit.1 Sir William Herschel announced its discovery on March 13, 1781.

Sir William Herschel observed the planet on March 13, 1781 while in the garden of his house located at 19 New King Street in the town of Bath (Somerset County),3 although initially (on April 26, 1781) He reported that it was a «comet.»4 Herschel «dedicated himself to making a series of observations on the parallax of fixed stars,»5 using a telescope designed by himself. Initially the name «Georgium Sidus» (George’s Star) was coined in honor of the king who had just lost the British colonies in America, but he had gained a star. It is, in fact, the only planet whose name is derived from a figure in Greek mythology (its Roman counterpart is Caelus). By 1827, Uranus was the most commonly used name for the planet even in Britain.

The discovery of Uranus marked a revolution in 18th century astronomy as it expanded the known limits of the Solar System for the first time in history. Uranus was the first planet to be discovered with a telescope.
