EDITORIAL: LA BRÚJULA DEL FUTURO

Hoy, martes 9 de junio de 2026, nos detenemos ante el umbral de la memoria colectiva en el Día Internacional de los Archivos. Al conmemorar esta fecha, resulta oportuno y necesario realizar un breve, pero profundo recorrido por nuestra caja nemotécnica, ese cofre sagrado donde la humanidad ha depositado sus huellas, sus caídas y sus más grandes glorias. Al abrir este inventario del alma humana, nos enfrentamos inevitablemente a una pregunta que define nuestra identidad: ¿qué sería de nuestra actual generación, si no tuviéramos como base un pasado que nos enseña a avanzar con firmeza más allá de las puertas del presente?
-La respuesta es clara: seríamos náufragos en el océano del tiempo, desprovistos de raíces y ciegos ante el porvenir. Los archivos no son depósitos de papeles inertes ni estanterías cubiertas de polvo; son testimonios latentes, la columna vertebral de nuestra civilización. Un pueblo sin archivos es un pueblo con amnesia, condenado a cometer los mismos errores. Es en el espejo de la historia donde encontramos las lecciones esenciales para edificar el mañana con paso seguro y certidumbre ética.
Los archivos son la memoria viva de los pueblos; en sus folios se resguarda la verdad que nos permite caminar hacia el futuro sin perder el rumbo.
Esta magna celebración tiene un origen histórico preciso que honra la institucionalidad global. Fue la UNESCO, el 9 de junio del año 1948, la que estableció con visión de futuro la creación del Consejo Internacional de Archives (CIA). El nacimiento de este organismo se dio con la noble y urgente finalidad de defender la protección y conservación del patrimonio documental del planeta, entendiendo que los documentos públicos y privados son la garantía de la transparencia, los derechos ciudadanos y la riqueza cultural de las naciones.
A casi ocho décadas de aquel hito fundacional, el panorama de la custodia de la memoria se ha transformado de manera asombrosa. Hoy, tenemos el privilegio de contar a nuestro favor con alta tecnología que nos permite almacenar y procesar todos los acontecimientos cotidianos, en los diferentes campos del universo. La digitalización, la inteligencia artificial y los sistemas avanzados de almacenamiento masivo han democratizado el acceso a la información, convirtiendo los archivos en herramientas dinámicas de conocimiento en tiempo real.
Sin embargo, esta era tecnológica también nos impone el inmenso desafío de la veracidad y la preservación digital a largo plazo. La técnica es el vehículo, pero el espíritu del archivista sigue siendo el mismo: el respeto irrestricto por el documento auténtico. Al celebrar hoy este día, rindamos homenaje a los guardianes del saber e invitemos a la sociedad a valorar estos templos de la memoria. Cuidar los archivos es proteger nuestra propia historia y asegurar que las futuras generaciones tengan un suelo firme sobre el cual seguir construyendo la grandeza humana.

Today, Tuesday, June 9, 2026, we pause before the threshold of collective memory on International Archives Day. In commemorating this date, it is fitting and necessary to take a brief but profound journey through our mnemonic box, that sacred chest where humanity has deposited its footprints, its falls, and its greatest glories. In opening this inventory of the human soul, we inevitably confront a question that defines our identity: what would become of our current generation if we did not have a past as our foundation, a past that teaches us to move forward with firmness beyond the threshold of the present?

The answer is clear: we would be shipwrecked in the ocean of time, rootless and blind to the future. Archives are not repositories of inert papers or dusty shelves; they are latent testimonies, the backbone of our civilization. A people without archives is a people with amnesia, condemned to repeat the same mistakes. It is in the mirror of history that we find the essential lessons for building tomorrow with a sure step and ethical certainty.

Archives are the living memory of peoples; their pages safeguard the truth that allows us to walk toward the future without losing our way.
This grand celebration has a precise historical origin that honors global institutions. It was UNESCO, on June 9, 1948, that foresightedly established the International Council on Archives (ICA). The birth of this organization was driven by the noble and urgent aim of defending the protection and preservation of the world’s documentary heritage, recognizing that public and private documents are the guarantee of transparency, citizens’ rights, and the cultural wealth of nations.

Almost eight decades after that foundational milestone, the landscape of preserving memory has been transformed in astonishing ways. Today, we have the privilege of having at our disposal advanced technology that allows us to store and process all of daily events in the various fields of our lives. Digitization, artificial intelligence, and advanced mass storage systems have democratized access to information, transforming archives into dynamic tools for real-time knowledge.

However, this technological era also presents us with the immense challenge of ensuring the long-term digital preservation of documents. Technology is the vehicle, but the archivist’s spirit remains the same: unwavering respect for the authentic document. As we celebrate this day, let us pay tribute to the guardians of knowledge and invite society to value these temples of memory. Caring for archives is protecting our own history and ensuring that future generations have a firm foundation upon which to continue building human greatness.
